CONFESS

Eternal God, in whom we live and move and have our being; Whose face is hidden from us by our sins; And whose mercy we forget in the blindness of our hearts; Cleanse us, we pray, from all our offenses; And deliver us from proud thoughts and vain desires; That with lowliness and meekness we may draw near to you; Confessing our faults, confiding in your grace, and finding in you our refuge and our strength; Through Jesus Christ your Son. Amen.

John 15:26-16:4a

26“But when the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, he will bear witness about me. 27And you also will bear witness, because you have been with me from the beginning.

1“I have said all these things to you to keep you from falling away. 2They will put you out of the synagogues. Indeed, the hour is coming when whoever kills you will think he is offering service to God. 3And they will do these things because they have not known the Father, nor me. 4But I have said these things to you, that when their hour comes you may remember that I told them to you.

Though we may experience mistreatment at the hands of those who act in willful blindness and ignorance against the one whom the Father has sent “into the world,” Jesus provides us with this even greater consolation. Jesus will give us the gift of a clear conscience. Together the Father and Son will send the Holy Spirit to dwell within us and to assure us of the truth of who Jesus is and what he has done to redeem us from this rebellious world and to renew the whole creation. We stand upon that truth, and from it we bear witness to the reality of who Jesus is in the midst of a needy world.

How does Jesus prepare us for opposition?

Weekly Collect

Gracious Father, whose blessed Son Jesus Christ came down from heaven to be the true bread which gives life to the world: Evermore give us this bread, that he may live in us, and we in him; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
