John 14:25-26

CONFESS

Most merciful God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who pardons all who truly repent and turn to you. We humbly confess our sins and ask for your mercy. We have not loved you with a pure heart and we have not loved our neighbor as ourselves. We have not done justly, not loved mercy, and not walked humbly with you, our God. Have mercy upon us according to your loving-kindness. According to the multitude of your tender mercies, blot out our iniquity. Create in us a clean heart and renew a right spirit within us. Cast us not away from your sight and take not your Holy Spirit from us Restore unto us the joy of your salvation, and uphold us with your Spirit. Amen.

John 14:25-26

25“These things I have spoken to you while I am still with you. 26But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.

Jesus has spoken many words to his disciples during this farewell discourse, and there are more words to come. The disciples cannot possibly absorb everything Jesus has said in the moment. But Jesus plants these seeds while he is still with them so that they might benefit from them in good time. Jesus further comforts his disciples with the promise that the Holy Spirit will speak the very same truths to their hearts. What an encouragement that is to us as well! The Holy Spirit will help us to understand words that we had once read or heard in the Scriptures and which seemed to have gone right over our heads.

Have you had the experience of suddenly understanding words in Scripture that you had previously read seemingly to no benefit?

PRAY

Weekly Collect

Almighty God, you know that we have no power in ourselves to help ourselves: Keep us both outwardly in our bodies and inwardly in our souls, that we may be defended from all adversities that may happen to the body, and from all evil thoughts that may assault and hurt the soul; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
