November 4, 2026
Bruce Gordon
We started with Augustine at restlessness. Now, Scottish author and minister George MacDonald takes us from restlessness to imagination. Yale Divinity professor Bruce Gordon returns to explore how imagination allows us to perceive possibilities that ordinary religious language may no longer make visible.
Bruce Gordon, a native of Canada, is the Titus Street Professor of Ecclesiastical History at Yale Divinity School, where he also teaches in the Department of History and the Humanities Program. Before joining Yale, he was Professor of History at the University of St Andrews in Scotland. His research focuses on the Reformation and its legacy, the history of the Bible and biblical cultures, and the history of dying and death. His publications include "Calvin" (Yale University Press, 2009), "The Christian Institutes of John Calvin" (Princeton University Press, 2016), and "Huldrych Zwingli: God’s Armed Prophet" (Yale University Press, 2021). Most recently, he is the author of "The Bible: A Global History" (Basic Books, 2024), named one of Publishers Weekly’s "Best Books of the Year." He lives in Vermont with his wife, Rona, and their rescue dog, Dougal.
